About Us

Who We Are

We would love to see every inmate in this nation touched by the healing power of God's love, restored to a right relationship with God, and ultimately returned to free society as law-abiding, productive, joyful, God-honoring citizens.

Our mission - To provide hope to prison inmates through prayer, evangelism, mentoring/discipleship, transitional assistance, and biblically based counseling.

Our history - The God of Hope Ministries was started in 2001 in Dallas, TX, by our executive director, Robert Dorrough (pictured above).  Chaplain Dorrough ("Chap") moved the ministry to Austin, TX, in 2005.  Robert opened a faith-based dormitory in 2006 at the Travis State Jail in east Austin, providing intensive ministry and Christian training to 56 male inmates for a 6-month semester.  We are now operating our sixth semester of training at the Travis unit.

In May of 2009 we opened our first women's faith-based dormitory at the Lockhart Prison in Lockhart, TX, having a format similar to the men's dormitory.

We already have requests to open additional dormitories.  We are responding to these requests as the Lord blesses this ministry with more volunteers and more financial resources.

Our organization - We operate very efficiently, with only a few paid staff members and a great many wonderful Christian volunteers who selflessly donate their time and skills to teach, counsel, and love these inmates in our local prisons.  We are directed by a board of directors, consisting of mature Christian leaders who keep our ministry aligned with God's leading.
